Children working in the Montessori Prepared Environment.

Working with the dressing frames is a practical life exercise and helps the children learn to dress themselves. This girl is working with the "tying frame" which will help her immensely when she is tying her own shoes.

These children are learning geography using an AMI approved puzzle map. Individual states may be removed and traced. The puzzle can be assembled in its frame, or for an added challenge, the children can try building the map free from it's frame.

This girl is working with the "teen or ten's board" The numbers 1 through 9 can be slid in over the number 10 to make numbers 11 through 19. This exercise helps the child build clarity out of the often confusing teen numbers, and helps lay the foundation for addition in the future.

Here the girl is adding beads to the "ten's board" to creat visual representations of the numbers she is forming on the board. A 10 bar plus a unit is 11, 10+1 = 11. A 10 bar and two units is 12, 10+2=12, and so on. For a Montessori student, math is more then memorization, it's a physical reality.

Collaboration and working together with one's peers is common place in the Montessori Environment. <br />

In this photo we can see four students all focused on their own work, at their own level, working in harmony with each other. The girl is working her "practical life" using a "dressing frame", as the boy is working with a "metal inset" making elaborate designs that will help him with hand eye coordination for writing at a later stage.

This student is enjoying some time alone with a book in the "reading corner." The reading corner is a staple of the Montessori Prepared Environment. Always stocked with books, it is the perfect place for a young mind to seek solitude and be alone with one's imagination.<br />

In the reading corner the child is free to read about dinosaurs, spaceships, castles, princesses, dogs or whatever their hearts desire.

In one week we were able to fill this bin with healthy, non-perishable food items as a way of giving back to our community!
